I need to hire another eye surgeon:
I always need 2 junior eye surgeons to serve as Refractive Fellows & work at my clinic, but now I only have 1. I’m looking for an American to hire, but unemployment in the USA now is at the lowest rate it’s ever been, so it’s difficult to find workers
Shortly after the war started, I sponsored Maria Rii, an eye doctor from Lviv, on a U4U visa to come to complete a formal, US government-approved Refractive Fellowship at my clinic. Unfortunately, I made the same 2 mistakes hiring her that I did with Hanna: her English was only “advanced-intermediate”, not “advanced”, and she didn’t need LASEK herself or have any sales experience, so wasn’t good at “selling” LASEK to customers.
Dr. Rii never performed any major eye surgery in Ukraine, because the medical training system is different there, and surgeons don’t teach younger doctors how to operate because they don’t want the competition. However, this is a problem, because all 3 of the 3 Ukrainian eye doctors I’ve had as Fellows have not been confident in the operating room, & do not have a surgeon’s confidence. This is different than the other 20 eye doctors I’ve hired as Fellows from 15 different countries (including the USA), who were trained as surgeons
Dr. Rii also had no friends or family in the USA, & strangely didn’t take my advice to spend time in the “Little Ukraine” neighborhood that’s only a 10-minute walk from my clinic on Park Avenue, where there are 3 Ukrainian churches, a Ukrainian school, a Ukrainian museum, the Shevchenko Sports Club, and Ukrainian restaurants. So she got homesick after a few months & returned to Lviv
To apply to be hired as a Refractive Fellow, you must have perfect spoken and written English so you can establish rapport and communicate effectively. You must show confidence so Free Consultations proceed with LASEK. You must also be good at “sales”.
You must also be willing to help the Front Desk staff whenever necessary & be a “team player”.
You do not have to be licensed or pass their exams to work in our clinic, as you will be working under my direct supervision & under my medical license and malpractice insurance. This is why you must be an excellent doctor! You will assist me in the OR on all surgeries.
My clinic is 1 of 5 in the USA which is sanctioned by the US government as an official SF Match Fellowship, so you will receive an official Diploma upon submission of 1 research paper to an American peer-reviewed publication
If you are in glasses or contacts, you must be willing to get LASEK by Dr. Chynn within a few months of beginning your Fellowship, because we cannot have anyone in our center who does not believe in refractive surgery. Dr. Chynn was the 1st eye surgeon in NYC to get LASIK (in his dominant eye) in 1999, and the 1st to get LASEK (in his non-dominant eye) in 2020. All of our employees have had refractive surgery themselves
Refractive Fellows are paid $4000 per month in cash, which is enough to rent an apartment
